Campaign Update #14 - Penny has Arrived!!!
over 6 years ago – Tue, Oct 24, 2017 at 01:12:18 AM

SHE’S HERE!

RWBY: Combat Ready is officially combat ready with the arrival of the one and only Penny Polendina! With this unlock, her deck will be included in all versions of the game.

Penny comes with a 30-card deck representing her attacks, actions, and special movies. Additionally she comes with one (1) player track scroll that includes all the upgrades from previous unlocked stretch goals, one (1) highly detailed miniature, and one (1) upgraded 3D semblance marker.

As a note, RWBY: Combat Ready is still an up to 4-Player game, so if someone in your group wants to play as Penny, that means one of the four RWBY girls would have to be replaced for a round.

Thank you so much for your continued support. This campaign continues to blow us away!

Developer Update #3 - Combos & Assists!
over 6 years ago – Sat, Oct 21, 2017 at 10:40:55 PM

Hi all!

With this developer update we’ll focus on the two primary ways in which sideline players can support the center stage player: Combos and Assists! RWBY: Combat Ready is all about teamwork, and all players will need to work hard together to ensure the center stage player succeeds against the Villain!

Battles, Duels, and Rounds

First, a brief refresher on Battles, Duels, and Rounds: Each Battle is a face-off between the players and the Villain, plus one or more objectives. Battles are fought in a series of Duels. In each Duel, one player is the center stage player fighting the Villain, while the other players are sideline players who offer support. The center stage player has the camera focused on them as they drive the Duel and the action!

Duels are fought in a series of combat Rounds. The Rounds are short and fast-paced, escalating to a crescendo as one of the combatants is bashed away by a powerful attack. The center stage player may not voluntarily retire from the Duel, but if they run out of cards they are forced to withdraw out of exhaustion.

When a Duel ends, the next player clockwise becomes the center stage player, and another Duel with the Villain begins. Duels continue until the players defeat the Villain or are defeated themselves, ending the Battle.

Player Actions

At the beginning of every Round, the center stage player considers the Villain’s stance and selects the attack they want to play from their hand of cards, placing the chosen card face up on the table for all players to see. Afterwards, each sideline player decides what action they wish to take for the Round. Usually, sideline players take turns, going around the table clockwise, announcing what they are doing for the Round. However, experienced players can often do this simultaneously!

Sideline players will need to decide whether they will encounter an objective card (such as fighting a Sub-Boss or Minion) or rest to recover from battle. Alternatively, they can choose to Assist a player, or perform a Combo against the Villain alongside the center stage player.

Assists

Some cards have an Assist ability printed at the bottom. This is an alternate way to play the card to support a fellow teammate. Assists can boost an ally’s speed or damage, heal their Aura, shield them from attack, increase their Battle Fury, allow them to draw extra cards for fresh options, and much more! Playing a card for its Assist ability can be a very tough decision because you are forfeiting the primary attack which is also printed on the card.

Assisting is a great way to lend support to your allies when they are most in need. They offer a variety of situational boosts that can turn the tide at a pivotal moment in the battle! Assisting also grants you bonus experience for helping your allies! Gaining experience and upgrading cards are a topic for another discussion.

Combos

The combo system allows players to double down on each other’s attacks in an all-or-nothing gamble to take down the Villain! When a sideline player decides to combo with the center stage player, they place their attack card with the center stage player’s card. Other sideline players may join in and combo too, and it’s even possible to create an epic 4-player combo attack!

The players involved in a combo are attacking together as a team, so they all slow down to match the lowest speed attack. In other words, when the Villain’s card is revealed, his card’s speed is compared to the speed of the lowest speed attack amongst the players involved in the combo.

Combos are very exciting risk-reward plays – because either all the players will hit the Villain, or the Villain will hit all of the players!

If the Villain hits, he deals his attack’s damage and effects to each and every player! If the players hit, they each deal their attack’s damage and effects to the Villain. Furthermore, a successful combo deals bonus damage equal to the number of additional attacks played beyond the first! This bonus combo damage represents the team’s synergy gained through a coordinated strike!

Combos can be risky moves to make, but the potential payoff is huge! Players want to try to match their speeds as closely as possible to maximize the synergy of their attack. Ideally, every attack in a combo is the same speed.

Combos are easier to pull off when the Villain is at a lower speed, but be careful, his Subtle stance is filled with devious tricks that could thwart the effort!
